Jenni Cresswell

Growing up in the 70’s it wasn’t difficult to get caught up in the handicraft resurgence and I learnt such skills as knitting, macramé and cross stitch at an early age.  Many women in my family also work textile magic, with my mother being a particularly inspirational figure.

Once discovered, my love of textiles never really left and I have had ‘something on the ‘go’ ever since. I took an O Level in textile art, but then nothing formal again until spending 4 years with Kim Thittichai studying all things experimental. Much of my recent work is inspired by my surrounding environment, but some pieces seem to pop straight out of my imagination!

I like to use left over or ‘hand me down’ fabrics rather than buying new. I particularly like fragile and worn textiles and then tend to manipulate them by fraying or ripping. Layering of the deconstructed materials including painted paper, melted tyvek, hand-dyed fabrics then adds to the basic pieces. Hand stitching is the most exciting aspect of my work – this is where the pieces really come to life.  I never really know how they will turn out once I start sewing and I love the journey this takes me on.
