Judy Martin is a painter and teacher also known as the author of a number of practical art books. She has been living and working Brighton and Hove for twenty years and exhibits every year in the Artists' Open Houses during Brighton Festival, usually opening her own house to show paintings, drawings, prints and mixed media work.
Judy works on her paintings in series, sometimes exploring the visual potential of a single image, sometimes ranging across a broader topic, as in the Dancers or Downs series. In recent years her work has been concerned with figure and portrait subjects drawn from a variety of sources: the images are allowed to evolve in ways that may take them beyond the original subject, resulting in a combination of observed and invented elements. Surface qualities are important, each picture is uniquely formed by the materials and processes used.
The work showing at 126 Norwich Drive comes from the Family photos series. The photos are from family albums of the 1920s and 30s. Although there is an obvious sentimental association, the photos are chosen randomly on the basis of visual rather than narrative qualities.
