Judy Williams

Having trained originally as an Art Historian at Middlesex University and London University.  I decided a few years ago to become a practising artist. I was fascinated by my family history and set about searching for my mother’s origins. Both my parents were Jewish refugees.

The search, ‘my quest’ took the form of an obsession with old walls and surfaces around Eastern Europe. I travelled to Prague, Budapest and Slovakia and my early work was based on the surface texture of old walls done in an abstract format.  Colour has always been a very strong expressive element for me and I use it to evoke moods in my monoprints.

As I have progressed I have been working with certain marks seen in old walls and the latest series is called Traces.  I have looked at rock surfaces as well as walls and worked in print and textiles using the marks that I see as evidence of the layers of time and the idea of a suggestion of lives lived before.

2007 marked the start of First Sett Printmakers, a print group I founded to work together at Badger Press Hampshire.  We are a small group of artists from diverse backgrounds who see print as an integral part of our creative output.
